WHAT IS A RESIN DRIVEWAY & WHAT COSTS ARE INVOLVED?
Resin bound driveways present a Eco Friendly, Slip & Puddle Resistant, Robust & Aesthetically pleasing option for homeowners. This system combines aggregate with a clear, UV-resistant resin manufactured by the world #1manufacturer of resinbound systems to create a uniform surface that can be installed under various weather conditions. Resin bound systems provide superior integrity and permeability. With the structual reinforcement mesh, vubamac binder course & resinbound top coat. This choice not only elevates the visual appeal of your driveway but also ensures compliance with SUDS regulations for effective water drainage.
Benefits..
-
Durable and long-lasting with a lifespan of over 20 years*
-
(25 Year Manufacturer guarantee *If the whole system including type3 permeable base, binder course and resinbound top surfacing is used).
-
Low-maintenance and easy to clean.
-
Attractive, natural-looking surface that can complement a wide variety of homes.
-
Permeable as it allows water to pass through the surface and into the ground which helps to prevent flooding and water runoff.
-
Environmentally friendly because its made from natural materials.
-
Doesn’t require to much use of heavy machinery or equipment during the installation.
-
It is resistant to UV rays and stains, which protects the colour and finish of the driveway.
-
Resin Can be installed over very good condition existing surfaces it just wouldn't get the 25 year manufacturer system guarantee as that requires the full suds compliant subbase and binding layer.. but if your existing surface is good quality resin could be overlaid making it a cost-effective solution.
-
Resinbound also Offers a wide range of design options & can be customized to match the colour and style of any property.
-
Provides a slip-resistant surface, which makes it safe to walk on in any weather condition.
ARE THERE ANY DOWNSIDES TO RESINBOUND DRIVEWAYS / SURFACES?

-
Initial installation cost can be higher than traditional driveway materials for example, fully permeable surfaces require permeable Subbases. so you cant use a cheap sub base you have to use zero fines Type3 MOT at the specified depth for the intended traffic.
-
It also Requires a skilled & experienced installer team to ensure proper installation from consistently timed mixes and cleaning of tools/equipment which all lead to a quality finish so not recommended to be tried at part of a diy home improvement.
-
Not suitable for areas with heavy tree roots, as roots can grow through the surface and cause damage the same as it would any other surface.
Overall, Resin bound surfaces are a cost-effective, Low maintenance & Eco-friendly method of improving your driveway or patio WITHOUT Planning Permission. However, the slightly higher installation costs
(as below) may be a bit more than block paving driveways or tarmac driveways/pathways which are usually around £130-£180pm2 -
but typically, that type of installation won't use a fully permeable SuDS compliant subbase material like type3 MOT. So it could require planning permission to change if at the front of property and more than 5m2. As linking driveway runoffs to drainage systems from them surfaces in turn put pressure on the drainage systems. which can cause problems in flood prone areas.

Where as you Do NOT Need planning with a fully permeable Surface & Subbase.
How Much Does A Resin Driveway Cost Roughly?

On a ROUGH AVERAGE, a basic overlay of resin bound be it a path or driveway can cost anywhere from £90 to £120 per square meter. This cost includes the labour and materials for the installation with no additional features or designs. If you opt for a SuDS Compliant resin Surface and Ground Prep with SuDS Compliant larger Type3 Zero Fines aggregate, the cost can increase to £160 to £230 per square meter Depending on Intended traffic as different traffic require different depths.
Sub Base - Pedestrian/Heavy Vehicle 150/225mm.
Binder Course - Pedestrian/Heavy Vehicle 20/33mm.
Top Layer -Pedestrian/Heavy Vehicle 15/21mm.
It’s worth pointing out that adding additional features such as additional anti-slip pro crushed quartz layering or specific designs can increase the cost of a resin driveway even further.
Therefore, taking into account the cost of a resin driveway per square meter, you can Approximate the different costs for a standard sized driveway as shown below:
Average Size, 50m²
Resin Overlay -
Over Good Condition Pre existing surface
£4,500 – £6,000
Average Size, 50m²
Resin Bound System & Premium Aggregate SuDS Compliant 25yr
£8,000 – £11,500
What Factors Affects The Cost To Install A Resin Driveway?
-
Size of the Driveway: The larger the area to be covered, the more material and labour will be required.
-
Type of Resin: Different types of resin have different price points with some being more expensive than others. For example, a UV-stable resin will cost more than a standard resin. (WE ONLY USE UV RESIN)
-
Surface Preparation: If the surface of the driveway is uneven or requires extensive preparation such as removing old pavement or levelling the ground, this’ll add to the cost.
-
Additional Features: Additional features will add to the overall cost and this can include borders, edging or a specific pattern.
-
Location: The cost of labour and materials can vary depending on location with prices being higher in city areas compared to rural areas.
What’s Usually Involved In Installing Resin Driveways?
1. Resin Driveway Design
Choose the desired colour, size of aggregate, edging, resin type and quality with the help of either our team or the online design software from Vuba resin to help visualise what your chosen colour would look like with your property. Once you’ve decided, We will order the required materials.

2. Prepare The Driveway/SubBase
We will begin to prepare the driveway depending on specific job requirements by removing existing bases blockwork, tarmac or gravel & excavating down to the required depth for surfaces intended traffic Utilising a Type3 Mot as a sub base is not only great for strength, but with the aggregates natural angular shapes, The stones interlock when compacted, while still allowing voids for fast percolation of any water that has just drained through the highly permeable decorative vuba resinbound stone top layer and the vubamac binder course below* (*which would be laid above the sub base)

3. Install Edging (Optional)
Next, the installation of the first layer of Structual reinforcement mesh, the edge / trim installations will start and we will install the edgings/trims to the required height for the project. usually so that the edgings/trims stands at least the height of the overall resinbound stone system/ above the base to retain structural shape and to prevent loose stones.
4. Lay The Resin Binder Course
VubaMac is our recommended base for Vuba Surfacing. With a monolithic bond guaranteeing long-lasting performance, VubaMac surpasses conventional materials like concrete and asphalt in longevity and flexibility. Plus, its ease of application, provided by a single supplier, offers unmatched convenience, with installations completed in just one day, minimising disruption and providing a smoother, quieter alternative. Say hello to a greener, more resilient future with VubaMac
5. Lay The Resin
Once the resin bound binder course has cured a second layer of SRM structual reinforcement mesh is laid. Aggregates & Resin will then be mixed using a forced action mixer for a specific, consistent time. it is then loaded into the sledge to specified height and laid out. Once laid, the race is then on to ensure that it’s flattened to provide a nice smooth, even finish.
6. Allow The Resin To Dry
Now that the hard work is done, you’ll then want to allow the driveway to set. around 24 hr for foot traffic and at least 72hr for heavy vehicles
OVERALL.
Overall, Resin bound driveways are a great investment, Not only do they look great but the limited maintenance required (occasional sweeping and hosing down) but they are also SuDS Compliant, which will become a standard in 2025, as it reduces the amount of water going into the drainage system, as fully permeable surfaces and bases allow water to filter back into the ground, this helps reduce chances of flooding at your property. Along with the durability of the system, resin bound surfaces are worth the premium costs involved with the preperation & installation.
